Stephen C. Moulton
Stephen Moulton helps leaders particularly Healthcare Leaders that worry that they or their team aren’t hiring and keeping the great leaders and employees they need to be successful.
He didn’t start his career in healthcare, he started in the aerospace industry.
Very early in his career, he was tasked with hiring 1000 people in less than six months, to build airplanes at Lockheed in California. Far too frequently, he was stopped by managers who would say something like, "Steve, so and so you hired for me is technically good but has a bad attitude."
He'd ask, "What does that mean?"
Responses included, "They don’t follow instructions," "They aren’t a good team player," "They don’t work well with others," and "They don’t pay attention to details" and the list went on.
He would then follow-up with, "Tell me about one of your best employees and what makes him or her effective."
A pattern began to form. The managers gave answers that went far beyond the typical technical skills necessary to do a good job. They spoke of behavioral and emotional intelligence competencies.
In addition to hiring, he was responsible for terminating the problem employees he hired, which increased the number of people he needed to hire.
So both challenges inspired a quest to improve his ability to make better hiring decisions.
A new picture began to form, one with clearly delineated behaviors and competencies that would really raise the bar and sort out those candidates not only more likely to fit, but succeed, from those who would not.
Later in his career he began working in the healthcare industry and after much research and effort, he assembled a process that has helped hospitals raise the bar on the quality of leaders and employees hired. He helped one organization reduce turnover by an amazing 69%.
The Result? Proprietary tools, training and coaching that takes the guesswork out of the selection process. Leaders have been amazed by the level of information they have gained by using Stephen’s time proven system.
Soon he began assisting senior executives who needed to fill key positions and wanted a fresh perspective, along with help in making the selection as objective and effective as possible.
He has worked with such hospitals and hospital systems as: Lee Memorial Healthcare, Shands Healthcare, Memorial Hospital System in Hollywood Florida, Columbus Regional, Avera Health System, and others.
He is the author of The CEO’s Advantage—7 Keys for Hiring Extraordinary Leaders and the forthcoming book Engage - Leadership and Building an Engaged Team.
His educational background includes a master’s degree in management from the University of Redlands, California and two professional designations from UCLA, one in industrial relations and the other in organization and human resource development.
