Steve MoultonStephen C. Moulton

Author of The CEO’s Advantage—7 Keys for Hiring Extraordinary Leaders.

Stephen Moulton, President and Chief Insight Officer of Action Insight, is an author, software inventor, and competency guru.

Stephen didn’t start his career in healthcare, he started in the aerospace industry.

Very early in Stephen’s career, he was tasked with hiring 1000 people in less than six months for Lockheed in California. Far too frequently, Stephen was stopped by managers who would say something like, "Steve, the person you hired for me is technically good but has a bad attitude."

Stephen would then ask, "What does that mean?"

Responses to that question included, "They don’t follow instructions well," "They aren’t a good team player," "They don’t work well with others," and "They don’t pay attention to details."

Stephen would then say, "Tell me about one of your best employees and what makes him or her effective."

A pattern began to form. The managers gave answers that went far beyond the typical technical skills necessary to do a good job. They spoke of behavioral traits.

That experience inspired a quest to improve his selection decision capabilities. A picture began to form for Stephen, one that clearly delineated a series of behaviors and competencies that would really raise the bar and sort out those candidates more likely to succeed from those who were not.

Stephen left Lockheed and, after much research and effort, he assembled a process that has helped client hospitals raise the bar on the quality of employees hired. That process has improved patient satisfaction scores 33 points and reduce turnover by up to 69%.

As Stephen’s career progressed, he began assisting senior executives who needed to fill key positions and wanted a third party perspective, along with help in making the selection as objective and effective as possible.

Stephen has worked with such hospitals and hospital systems as: Lee Memorial Healthcare, Shands Healthcare, Memorial Hospital System Hollywood Florida, Columbus Regional, Avera Health System and others.

His educational background includes a master’s degree in management from the University of Redlands, California and two professional designations from UCLA, one in industrial relations and the other in organization and human resource development.
